Degrees
The department offers several different courses of study for the MA and PhD degrees.
MA in French Language and Literature
This two-year degree program ensures that the students acquire a broad knowledge of French and francophone literatures and cultures.
PhD with MA en route in French Language and Literature
In this six-year program, students complete thirteen 2000-level courses, take MA and PhD comprehensive exams, andresearch and write a doctoral dissertation on an aspect of French or Francophone literature and culture. The degree is intended for students who wish to pursue the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in French Language and Literature but who do not already hold an M.A. in this field or in a closely-related discipline. Students must first successfully complete the requirements for the M.A. in French Language and Literature above, normally within their first two years of full-time enrollment. Students doing the Ph.D. with the M.A. en route will be awarded an M.A. degree at the completion of these requirements.
PhD in French Language and Literature
In this five-year program, students complete eight 2000-level courses beyond the MA, take their PhD comprehensive exams, and research and write a doctoral dissertation on an aspect of French or Francophone literature and culture.
MA in Italian Language and Literature
This two-year program insures that students acquire a broad knowledge of Italian language, literature, and culture.
