PhD Comprehensive Exam Policy
Language Used in Comprehensive Examinations
Candidates will write their examination in the major language or in English. They will choose the language they handle more naturally. However, students who write in English must write one of their exams in the major language, and students writing in the major language must write one of their exams in English. Either French or English or both can be spoken during the oral exam.
PhD Dates
Students in the PhD program will be permitted to take the comprehensive examinations at any time in the academic year provided that:
- They inform their adviser of the period during which they wish to take the examinations at least two months in advance; and
- The dates requested are acceptable to all members of the committee.
The student should submit a timetable scheduling the dates on which the four examinations will be taken. For students on a Teaching Fellowship, all exams have to be passed between the beginning of their third term and the end of their fifth term. The timetable should be submitted to the director of graduate studies by October 15 of their second year.
Repetition of PhD Comprehensive Examinations
For PhD candidates, this repetition must take place within 6 months of the original examination.
