Passages Roundtable | Translation & Migration
Translation and Migration Roundtable featuring Moira Inghilleri (University of Massachusetts, Amherst), Mary Jayne McCullugh (Global Wordsmiths); and members of the Pittsburgh language access community: Stephen Juma (GSPIA) and Odeese Khalil (C3LT). Moderated by Heath Cabot (University of Pittsburgh, Anthropology)
How do linguistic factors impact the experience of migration? What barriers or challenges are represented by poor or insufficient access to the dominant language? How does language mediate the relationship between migrants and their host communities? What structures and institutions exist to help migrants navigate these new networks and relationships? Who are the stakeholders in these structures? To what extent can translation and interpreting become vehicles—within migrant communities, among migrant communities, and between migrant communities and the host community—for changing and new relationships?
